Don't Fawn over Her too much

I like to make several framed sculptures for my Galley in the Dragon Con Art Show. I enjoy them because it is a 3D piece you can hang on your wall. This year I am working on a sweet Fawn. Slightly different than a satyr or pan (a creature that is half goat) a fawn has attributes more similar to a deer.
Well let's get started on our Polymer Clay Sculpture.
Began with the head on this piece. I took my time to get the look just right to reflect the attitude I was trying to achieve in this sculpture. I was going for a peaceful look. And I wanted my fawn to be holding/playing a pipe so I puckered her lips slightly.
After I was happy with the head and face I worked on her ears. Since I wanted this piece to resemble a deer, I sculpted her some sweet animal ears.
Pretty cute don't ya think?
Normally I wait until last to sculpt any extensions or accessories but for this one I went ahead and made her some antlers and her pan pipes.

Now to sculpt her torso. The display frame for my fawn is around 3.5x3.5 so I only needed to make half a body, stopping just above the hips.

I added the neck, upper arms and shoulders next.

Then the hands are sculpted and added to the arms, making sure to angle them so they can hold her pipes.

This small collage walks you through my hand making process.
This collage is for a three fingered Myxie.
With the main piece done, I get started on the background and frame. I like to use small wood frames and remove the glass and back part. Then I make a new back out of polymer clay. This makes it easier to attach my sculpture to the frame. Flowers and leaves are sculpted inside the frame right onto the background.
I make a few other flowers to go in our fawn's hair.
The little fawn is attached to the background, using craft wire and liquid Sculpey, and then baked.
Details are usually painted on after the baking but with this one I did a bit of detailing before hand. It works well either way.
She is now baked and ready for her hair do.

For the hair I take white doll hair and separate it into thin sections. Each section is tipped with a spot of glue, I like to use hot glue so it dries faster. Each bit of hair is then placed carefully on the fawn's head until she has a lovely updo.

Our girl is all finished now and looking enchanting as she plays her pan pipes.

I hope you enjoyed this step by step process. Check out my social media sites for more of my art.

Dia de los Muertos Sculpture

So I've finished working on my next Framed Sculpture. Though I super enjoy the fairy tale themed pieces, I got a fun idea for the next one that isn't fairy tale based.
I have become fascinated with the Dia de los Muertos or Day of the Dead face paint. I think it is just beautiful! So this was the bases for my latest framed sculpture.
As with my other framed sculptures. I started by sculpting the accessories and the back drop on the frame. I also painted the frame, I thought an aged white would go nicely with the light purple and pink roses.

After that, I sculpted the main part, the beautiful Lady D'Muertos. Her face paint was incredibly fun to experiment with. I first tried out different designs on paper, then penciled them on her face and painted over it.

Then I was ready to add her hair and attach her to the frame. Now she is ready to give a Mexican Holiday flare to the Dragon Con Art Show, where she will be on Display in the Gallery.

Thanks so much for reading everyone! Keep checking my blog and Facebook page for updates on my latest pieces.

Beauty and the Beast Framed Sculpture

Finished another framed fairytale sculpture this week! I already did a Snow White Framed Sculpture so This one is Beauty and the Beast.
Started out with the Beast, using silver Polymer Clay, I sculpted his head right on the frame. Then painted him to blend.

Then I painted the backdrop. I did some candle holders and a chandelier, adding cobwebs completed the old castle feel, nicely I think :)

Then I sculpted Beauty. She was so much fun to make. I tried to give her a soft, admiring look on her face, to give a sense of the love she felt for Beast.

Last, I put it all together for a beautiful piece, that also tells a story :)

Snow White Framed Sculpture

I've been slowly working on a new piece, it's also a fairly new concept for me too. Framed Sculptures. I have only done two before and they were about half the size of this one, so I wasn't sure how it was going to turn out...
Started by making a Polymer Clay Sculpture and some polymer clay apples, roses and little birds :)

After adding clothes and finishing details I then took an 8" frame and, with my hubby's wood working skills, made a wood back, hand painted and attached it to the frame.
Then attached all the sculpted pieces to the Framed back drop and Here she is! Snow White in the Falling snow. No idea why she is dressed like that out in the snow but it's pretty at least LOL :D

This piece is going to be displayed in my Bay Auction Gallery at the Dragon Con Art Show in September :)
I have a few other framed sculptures planned before Dragon Con so keep checking my Blog and Face Book page for updates :)

We're Painting the Roses RED!

I’ve been working on a 3 piece Wonderland series recently. So far I have completed 2 of the paintings and I’ll be starting on the final piece next week. The one I’ve just finished is of the Queen of Hearts. I did her on 15x20 white artist board with water colors. She is in a red and purple dress with hearts and cards on it. In the back ground of the painting I did white roses that have been painted red. This was EXTREMELY difficult to accomplish. I had the hardest time getting the roses to look like they were painted and not that I just didn’t color them in correctly. I tried dripping the paint onto the roses, but that didn’t look right and wouldn’t dry either. Next I tried smearing paint a crossed it and needless to say that made a mess. So then I just painted each rose leaving spaces and dripping the paint off the roses. At first I was not happy with it but after adding shadows and highlights it actually turned out pretty good.
So now here she is. Let me know what you think.

Also I’ve been working diligently on some brand new Scratch Art for Dragon Con, I’ll try and post photos soon so keep checking my blog for up dates.

Have a Great Day!
