Time to Brag :)

Hey Everyone! Dragon Con is over and things are starting to get back to normal…well all except the whole getting married in a little over a month WHAAAAAT!
Anyway so like always D-Con was fun, each year I meet boocoo bunches of colorful people. As always there were my favorite artists like Rob Carlos and Joseph Corsentino. Also a few 1st years I got the pleasure of meeting, like Marc Robinson, a talented young artist who’s work was just incredible http://marsillustration.blogspot.com/
Now for the part of the blog where I get all braggy…my head is a little bigger since Dragon Con cause, you my friends are now looking at an Award Winning Artist YAY! Yep, I won my 1st award at Dragon Con this year…not just one but two. Oh man was I uber stoked and so surprised. So I’m sitting there at the award ceremony just waiting to hear who the lucky winners are, not at all thinking I would be one of them. BUT HOO they called my name, TWICE YES little darlings! Can you tell I’m excited :) The attendees are the ones that choose the winners so Special Thanks to all of you that voted on my work, let me just tell you that it made this little artist’s day, really did.
Here are my award winning pictures;
Voted Best Horror “They’re Coming” Scratch Art piece in upper corner.
Voted Best Fairy “Steampunk Myxie” Polymer Clay sculpture, no pictures available yet.
Well it was fun as always and best part is now that I’ve won an award, I don’t have to pass a jury to get into Dragon Con 2011, YAH Baby Whoot! Anyways Thanks for letting me Brag.

With a Little Steampunk Thrown in

Hey Art Fans!
I got a few more Scratch Art for you to check out today. These are a few I finished last month but just now had time to post them. I know…LAZY! But I’ve been really busy preparing for Dragon Con…and By the Way…It’s ONLY like a week away! It came up So fast. Oh well enough of the excuses and complaints, on to the Scratch Art :)
Okay this first one was a lot of fun. Inspired by a Compass, obviously, with a little steampunk thrown in. “Compass Rose”
I currently have no title for the Angel one… calling it “Angle” just seemed Blahhhh.
The playing card one “Lady Luck”, was interesting to try and think up different images for the playing cards. I had to keep them simple so they would look right with the Scratch art but also didn’t want them to be too plan.

Hopefully I will be able to post more of the art that will be on display at Dragon Con but since I only have about a week left…..we’ll see.

Whooooo R U?

I’m steadily working on my last installment of my WonderLand Sieries. I’ve done The Queen of Hearts, The Mad Hatter and White Rabbit and now this last one is going to be The Cheshire Cat and the Caterpillar. Just like the other two paintings I’m doing this one on White Artist Board using Watercolors. Last night I finished the Chesshire Cat…all but her hair. See I painted her in colors of purple, pink and black, so I’m having a hard time deciding what color to make her hair. Black but that is so dark and I’m afraid it will draw the eye away from the center of the piece. Brown or Blonde I really don’t think would fit the personality of the Cat. So that leaves bright colors like Red but that would clash with the pink. I’m in quite a pickle so I’m probably gonna leave her hair until last and move on to the Caterpillar.
I printed a few pictures of caterpillars to get some color and marking ideas for Ms. “Who R U”. She will most likely be Green, Black and Yellow….ya know traditional Caterpillar colors :) The painting is coming along…slowly so far but I’m planning to finish it by next week and Hopefully post some pictures for you Lovely People then. Well that is all for now. Thanks for reading!

Gettin My Scratch On

I finally finished the Scratch Art pieces I was working on for Dragon Con. There are like 6 or 7…it’s hard to keep track after a few weeks of scratching. Anyway I’m posting just a few of the smaller ones because they were the only ones I could scan. One of which I’m quite happy with. I just call it Lilly, it’s an oriental inspired piece. I got the idea from an Asian Lily I had, the lily has long died since I really don’t have much of a green thumb but the inspiration didn’t. :)
Now that I am all done with the scratch art it’s time to move on to painting the very last piece of my Wonderland series…I know I said I would be doing that about a week ago but I needed to do something else for a while…a month of painting is all I can take, had to switch things up for a bit. Anyway here’s a few of the Scratch at that will be featured in the Art Gallery at Dragon Con, let me know what you think.

As soon as I’m done with the last painting I’m going to start on Brand new Myxies…I’m so excited about these, I have some great, fun ideas for them. Won’t be able to post them but they will be for sale at the Art Gallery also. Oh Boy!

How about some Cheese with that Whine

Good day my little Darlings!
I know I’ve been slacking on my blogging a bit recently. But I promise I’m not avoiding you. I would never do that…I love you guys :D I’m just a little overworked lately. Trying to plan a wedding leaves very little time for anything else, so my lovely readers get the shaft. Well I’d like to say that I’ll post more but it’s 4 months away from my big day…so we all know I’m just going to get busier. But I will promise to pick up my art and blogging as soon as things settle down.
Anyway now that I’m done making up excuses how about talking about ART…that’s what you all come here for anyway! :)
So I’ve been trying to crank out art like a MAD WOMEN for Dragon Con coming up in September. So far I’ve finished most of what I set out to do. My Gallery is going to be fuller then it has been in past years. I’m actually having to decide which pieces to leave out…not complaining…I just didn’t realize I was being so productive until after I was submitting my work. I’m really excited about it cause my painting technique has improved so much since last year. I think I finally found a way I’m comfortable with so I’m so pleased with the pieces I’ll have on display this year. I need to take a few Photos of my newest pieces and I’ll post a couple as soon as I do.
I’m on the last Piece of my “Wonderland” Series. Working on the Cheshire Cat and Caterpillar this week and once that’s complete it’s on to NEW MYXIES! YAY everyone’s Favorite! And OH BOY do I have some really cool ideas in store for them. Yes yes, I will post photos ;)
Anyhoos, I don’t have time to be lollygagging, back to work. I will post as often as I can, so keep checking my blogs so updates.
Love Ya!

We're Painting the Roses RED!

I’ve been working on a 3 piece Wonderland series recently. So far I have completed 2 of the paintings and I’ll be starting on the final piece next week. The one I’ve just finished is of the Queen of Hearts. I did her on 15x20 white artist board with water colors. She is in a red and purple dress with hearts and cards on it. In the back ground of the painting I did white roses that have been painted red. This was EXTREMELY difficult to accomplish. I had the hardest time getting the roses to look like they were painted and not that I just didn’t color them in correctly. I tried dripping the paint onto the roses, but that didn’t look right and wouldn’t dry either. Next I tried smearing paint a crossed it and needless to say that made a mess. So then I just painted each rose leaving spaces and dripping the paint off the roses. At first I was not happy with it but after adding shadows and highlights it actually turned out pretty good.
So now here she is. Let me know what you think.

Going a Little Bonkers

Man I’m kind of having a hard time keeping up. My Myxie inventory is looking pretty empty right now. I took a break from sculpting to work on some paintings I had planned for Dragon Con so my Myxies have been put on hold. I am fairly new to painting so I’m still incredibly slow finishing pieces. Right now I’m working on a Wonderland series. It is a three piece series of the Mad Hater and White Rabbit, the Cheshire Cat and the Caterpillar and The Queen of Hearts. I ,of course, am putting a Caralyn Edwards twist on the Characters though…they are all going to be girls…of course the Red Queen is a girl but she is going to be pretty. For those of you who saw my painting “Late for Tea” the others in the series are going to match it. So I have been a busy little bee with that and I also have a few other pieces that I am diligently working on. A few Si-fi paintings and as always, everyone’s’ favorite, Scratch Art! I still have a long way to go to be completely ready for Dragon Con and with trying to plan a wedding on top of it…. I’m going a little bonkers. You know on Looney-Tones when Bugs Bunny would go crazy and start hooting and hollering while hitting himself in the head with a mallet? Yeah that is pretty much what I feel like right now. But no time to complain I have heaps of stuff to get done. Hopefully I’ll be able to post a few of the new pieces for you to see as I go.
Anyway gotta get back to work, I’ll keep you updated on the MADNESS as it gets closer to Dragon Con!

Using Big Kid Markers Now!

I have really been enjoying using markers to color my work recently. No Not Crayola. Prismacolor of course...I’m using big kid markers now :) I had a hard time at first because once you color a spot you can’t UNcolor it like you can when using PhotoShop. I had to get used to planning out where I wanted it to stay white or where I was going to Highlight. In a way it is very similar to Scratch Art…only that is planning out where I want it to stay black.
Mostly I’ve stuck to the Artist Trading Cards but I’m considering branching out and coloring larger pieces with the Markers. I have become pretty confident with them, much more then I am with paint and with Markers I can get the colors to be more vibrant I think. I’m working on about 10 more trading cards and then I will get started coloring a 11x15 piece that I’ve been working on. It is one of my few Si-Fi pieces and I actually took it from a ATC that I did for Dragon Con last year. I’m excited to see how it turns out when coloring it all in Markers. It will be quite a task so wish me Luck! I’ll try and post progress photos as I go.

P.S. I’ve finished a few Brand New Myxies and should be posting them on my store soon, keep checking my blog for updates!

Thanks for reading.

Gather Around Kiddies and I’ll tell you a tale

So some of you may know that I have started working with Artist Trading Cards (ATCs). Little blank playing cards that you draw on, Paint or whatever you want really. I like to draw little pictures on mine and then color them with Markers. I’m really enjoying them and people seem to be responding well to them. I made about 10 for Dragon Con and went home with 0. Well I just recently got back to drawing a few more. I finished about 7 cards, then inked them before coloring them with Markers. Love that Coloring as you all probably know :P Anyhoo, I usually ink my work with felt-tip pens, I just like them cause they don’t bleed but usually bleeding isn’t a problem because after I ink my work I scan it to color it. So if I don’t have a felt-tip I just reach for whatever is there. So I just used some random ball-point to ink the ATCs I was working on. However I do all original ATCs so I color them before scanning. Much to my chagrin, this would be a bad decision. Now it was time to color and My Prismacolor markers, which NEVER bleed, started running wildly with the black ink, making a lovely mess out of the cards UGH! At first I thought it was the type of paper I was using but luckily before I had ruined to many I figured out what was the cause and stopped coloring. I wasn’t able to save the two I’d screwed up and the others will now have to be scanned and colored in PhotoShop. So the lesson for today kids is Ball-point pins don’t play nice with Markers…Remember that, it may save your lif….errr art :)

Go and learn from my mistakes. Later!

Color Me Excited!

HELLLLLLLLLLLOOOOOOOO!
So for those of you who know me, know I am a 5 year old stuck in a 26 year’s body, so naturally I would take great pleasure in the same activities as any elementary schooler. One such Activity is COLORING!!! Oh you betcha, no matter how old I get I never seem to tire of the enjoyment I get with a crayon or marker in my hand, FUN! I used to even bring coloring books to doodle in while I’m at the 9-5…but I finished them all off and don’t have anymore at the moment. So I guess I’ll just start acting like an adult and get to work…WRONG! I’m gonna draw my own stuff to color. Yep this is how I came up with my newest pictures. There I was thinking of something to draw that I could then color all over and have a grand ol time and The Color Kids popped into my head. What has more coloring opportunities then the COLOR KIDS from Rainbow Brite, the best 80s cartoon EVER..if you were a girl :P
Now For those of you who watched the show, these don’t look quite like the Color Kids you knew. I put my own little spin on them. So check them out, I hope you enjoy looking at them as much as I enjoyed coloring them. :)

Alice in Smexyland

Top of the Morning to Ya Friends!
So I have been diligently working on an Alice in Wonderland themed painting. It’s of the Mad Hater and the White Rabbit…only as Smexy Ladies! Yep, if you haven’t noticed from my other art, I have a tendency of to create mostly Hawt females…Not sure where that comes from, perhaps it’s because when I was a child I wanted to grow up to be a Barbie Doll. Or it could just be that the female form is easier to draw and their clothes are WAY more fun to draw :) Whatever the reason I am quite happy with this painting. It is done on white Board with Water colors, I call it “Late for Tea” …get it, since the Rabbit was always late and the Mad Hater…Well you get it. Anyway let me know what you think.

My Addiction to BARBIES!

BARBIES! I am totally addicted to those little Plastic Dolls, ever since I was a little girl making them dresses out of socks, nothing has changed…I still can’t help but walk down the Barbie isle when I go into a Toy Store. And have even made a few custom Barbies of my own.
So I was overly delighted to found this great site “One and Only Dolls”
This talented Artist makes custom Barbies that are just amazing. The details she puts into their clothes and hair makes them stand out, but she doesn’t stop there, she also hand paints each face…I know it’s awesome.
Anyway I’ll stop being a crazy uber fan, here’s the site. Check it out!

P.S. I’ve finished a few more Myxies this month and will try and post them soon. Thanks for reading!

Making a Book Part 2

So last Blog I started telling you of the little journey I took to make a book for my fiancé, let’s finish that tale shall we :)
So after staining and stapling the pages of his stories together it was now time to make a cover for the book. I knew I wanted to use leather for the cover and I thought having large stitches a crossed it would add to the creep factor. So I picked up a few scrap pieces of leather and some twine and began sewing them together. Sounds easy… NO! this leather was obviously made out of the toughest cow on the planet! No needle I had would go through it and neither would scissors. The only way I was able to get the needle through was to first cut a slit with an exacto knife. UGH so after 2 hrs the book cover was all sewn together.
I then took a piece of cardboard and brushed the one side with rubber cement. Carefully I lined up the leather and smoothed it on to the cardboard. Hot glue helped to secure the edges. I then placed a thin paper with bamboo print (Cause it matched the leather so nice)on the inside of the folded cardboard to give the book a lining and to cover the unsightly glue marks.
I wanted his book to have something on the cover that would stand off a bit. Going for a mixture of the Necronomicon and the Book form Hocus-pocus, I decided an eye would be appropriate and a few claws cutting through the leather. I made these both out of polymer clay and painted them. Cutting the leather I slid the eye and claws into place.
YAY the book was complete! And yes he Loved it.
I learn a whole bunch of tips and things to do differently if I ever do something like this again but for my first book I think it turned out rather well.
Here are a few pictures of it completed, Enjoy!

Making a Book

My fiancé is big into horror. He loves watching it, reading it, writing about it. He even tries to encourage me to try out a few horroresque type drawings…Too Bad Hunny, I don’t do scary…so I thought. Since he is a very talented writer, he has been considering having a few of his short stories published. Unfortunately circumstance has made us have to postpone it for a little while, to cheer him up I decided he didn’t have to wait to have his stories in a book. I started designing a way to make him a book that would compliment his stories. Something that would match his dark writing style.
When referring to creepy books, one comes to mind, the Necronomicon, ya know the Book from Evil Dead. No I wasn’t going to make him a book that summoned evil spirits but I was looking for the cover to be creepy like that.
The task began by printing about 12 of his stories off. I changed the font to “Parchment” an old Archaic looking font. After adding small sketches to a few of the pages I then printed them off front and back. I then started the tedious task of staining the pages. I wanted to give them an old, weathered look like ancient books have. Each page, there was about 60 of them, was carefully brushed with a wet tea bag. Interesting tip I learned while staining, regular tea gives you a yellow stain but flavored tea gives you a grayish stain. Yes I probably could’ve just gone to a printing store and printed it on yellow paper but I also wanted that weathered look you get from the wet pages after they dry. Stapled all the stories together along with a cover page and index, now it was ready for the cover.

Don’t want this Blog to be too long so I’ll tell you all about what I did next in my next blog. Stay Tuned :)

I'd be Happy as a Cricket!

So some of you may remember I tried to get published in the Spectrum 16 Art Book last year, Alas I was not accepted…But since you can’t keep a Good Dog Down, I am trying again this year! I submitted my work last week to be put into Spectrum 17. Since the juries change every year you never know if they will like your work or not. But to up my chances I submitted a few more then last year. I tried to send my best of each median I work with.
I sent a Photo of my sculpting, a drawing I did in PhotoShop, a painting, and some Scratch art.
I wanted the Jury to be able to get a range of all I can do. It would be awesome if they accept them all but I’ll just be happy as a Cricket if only one gets in. Spectrum is my favorite art Book, it has all kinds of different fantasy artists published in it, and I would love to be apart of them. Just thought I’d let you all know what I was up to so I can get a few supporters to keep their fingers crossed Heehee. Wish me luck!
Well thanks for reading, I’m starting on some new Myxies tonight so Please keep checking my blogs for updates.

It's A Boy!

Okay this my attempt at a guy to go with my Sky Birds. I kind of gave him a Final Fantasy feel with the crazy weapon. I don’t normally draw weapons so it took me a while to figure out how I wanted it to look but I think it came out well.

I sketched the picture on Backing board and colored it with water color paint.
