Where Have I Been?!

Haven’t Blogged in a few weeks, I have been pretty busy trying to recover from Dragon Con. The Art Show was Great by the way. Probably our 2nd best year ever. I got to meet a lot of my Facebook Followers, it was so nice to be able to meet the Face behind the comments. Also I won an Award, My Goria Zombie Myxie won “Best Doll”, my 1st juried award I’ve ever received at Dragon Con, so that was super exciting. :)

I have finished adding the little Steampunk Dragons that didn’t go home with someone during the Art Show and will be adding the last few Animal Pals this week. https://www.etsy.com/shop/MysticReflections
Now I’m trying to get my inventory back up, so for the next couple of weeks I will be sculpting new Steampunk Dragons and Animal Pals and hopefully coloring my newest sketches, along with a few others original pieces I have planned before the Holidays. As always, I have my schedule packed with all kinds of fun ideas, so here’s hoping I can get at least half of them done LOL :)

Also Check out this fun Etsy Treasury that two of my Dragons were featured in.

Thanks for reading, keep checking my Facebook page and Blog for my newest pieces.

Don’t Judge this Book by its Cover

So on top of being so very excited that my talented husband has just posted his first book for the Kindle, I am also psyched about having the cover I did for him posted. Yep, my very first book Cover. I was so worried about working on it when he asked me to do it for him, I’m more of a Character kinda girl, I like to drew people mostly. But even though it did not turn out exactly how I had envisioned it…and it sorta came out looking more like a bear paw instead of a wolf's…I’m pretty happy with how it came out. I think it complements the feel of the book fairly well. You Kindle owners that read his Book will have to let me know if you agree.

If you are interested in reading my husband’s Book…and you should be because it’s awesome…here’s the link to Amazon.

The To-Do List that just won’t stop growing!

I have a loooong To-Do List this month, Working on two commissions, Starting on my husband’s book cover, Doing my sister’s annual Christmas Card…This one is gonna be CUTE! I’m hoping to finish a few more pieces before the Holidays get here and if I have time I would love to update my cafépress store with my new art. I have needed to get this done for some time and have been dragging my feet like the lazy artist I am LOL.
And Last but not least submitting my Art to Spectrum and keeping my fingers crossed they accept me this year.
http://www.spectrumfantasticart.com/about.php
Spectrum is about to release their 19th Artist Book now and I have been submitting my work to them for about 4 years so far…I’m getting very used to their rejection but as always I’m just gonna keep submitting until they accept me :)

This has been such a busy year for me but it’s also been very exciting because I’m getting so many new people enjoying my work.
Now if I could just get more hours in a day it would be easy sailing for me…expecting the longer days any time now.

Anyway keep checking my blog for updates on my newest pieces. Thanks for reading!

That ain’t stopping me

Dangit, I really thought I had it this time, I was not accepted by Spectrum Art this year. Sent some pieces in that I was really excited about but no go. Well there is always next year, like I’ve said before, I’m gonna keep submitting every year until they either accept me or send me a cease and desist letter…and even then it may not stop me LOL. Oh well no time to cry over it, I’ve got work to do to get prepared for Dragon Con…they rejected me a few times too but I convinced them in the end and now they invite me every year Haha :D So I guess the moral of the blog today is don’t give up little darlings, because the more you pester an organization the more likely they are to finally cave in LOL :) Thanks for reading! ~Caralyn

Again with the Spectrum!

Just Submitted a few pieces to Spectrum Art Books. http://www.spectrumfantasticart.com/books.php?id=567
I really hope they accept me this year. I sent some good pieces I think but the dealine came up so quickly I really didn’t have time to prepare. The first two years I submitted a piece specially done for the book, this year I didn’t have enough time. Though the submissions are some of my newest and best pieces in my opinion…I still wish I had had time to do something just for the Book. But even if they accept me I still plan to submit a piece every year I can so there is still time to do “special” works.
This year is going to be the year of stocking my inventory, I let it get too empty last year so I’m building it up and I have SO many great ideas. I have already started on my newest Myxies and, not to toot my own horn, but I am out doing myself. My sculptures have more details in their clothes and bodies. I am trying to go outside my safe zone and create things for them I didn’t even think of before. I really hope you all like them because I have been working extra hard to make them just right. Hopefully I will have Photos for you soon, I can’t wait until they are all finished.
Keep Checking my Blog for updates on my work. Thanks for reading!

Making a Book Part 2

So last Blog I started telling you of the little journey I took to make a book for my fiancé, let’s finish that tale shall we :)
So after staining and stapling the pages of his stories together it was now time to make a cover for the book. I knew I wanted to use leather for the cover and I thought having large stitches a crossed it would add to the creep factor. So I picked up a few scrap pieces of leather and some twine and began sewing them together. Sounds easy… NO! this leather was obviously made out of the toughest cow on the planet! No needle I had would go through it and neither would scissors. The only way I was able to get the needle through was to first cut a slit with an exacto knife. UGH so after 2 hrs the book cover was all sewn together.
I then took a piece of cardboard and brushed the one side with rubber cement. Carefully I lined up the leather and smoothed it on to the cardboard. Hot glue helped to secure the edges. I then placed a thin paper with bamboo print (Cause it matched the leather so nice)on the inside of the folded cardboard to give the book a lining and to cover the unsightly glue marks.
I wanted his book to have something on the cover that would stand off a bit. Going for a mixture of the Necronomicon and the Book form Hocus-pocus, I decided an eye would be appropriate and a few claws cutting through the leather. I made these both out of polymer clay and painted them. Cutting the leather I slid the eye and claws into place.
YAY the book was complete! And yes he Loved it.
I learn a whole bunch of tips and things to do differently if I ever do something like this again but for my first book I think it turned out rather well.
Here are a few pictures of it completed, Enjoy!

Making a Book

My fiancé is big into horror. He loves watching it, reading it, writing about it. He even tries to encourage me to try out a few horroresque type drawings…Too Bad Hunny, I don’t do scary…so I thought. Since he is a very talented writer, he has been considering having a few of his short stories published. Unfortunately circumstance has made us have to postpone it for a little while, to cheer him up I decided he didn’t have to wait to have his stories in a book. I started designing a way to make him a book that would compliment his stories. Something that would match his dark writing style.
When referring to creepy books, one comes to mind, the Necronomicon, ya know the Book from Evil Dead. No I wasn’t going to make him a book that summoned evil spirits but I was looking for the cover to be creepy like that.
The task began by printing about 12 of his stories off. I changed the font to “Parchment” an old Archaic looking font. After adding small sketches to a few of the pages I then printed them off front and back. I then started the tedious task of staining the pages. I wanted to give them an old, weathered look like ancient books have. Each page, there was about 60 of them, was carefully brushed with a wet tea bag. Interesting tip I learned while staining, regular tea gives you a yellow stain but flavored tea gives you a grayish stain. Yes I probably could’ve just gone to a printing store and printed it on yellow paper but I also wanted that weathered look you get from the wet pages after they dry. Stapled all the stories together along with a cover page and index, now it was ready for the cover.

Don’t want this Blog to be too long so I’ll tell you all about what I did next in my next blog. Stay Tuned :)

I'd be Happy as a Cricket!

So some of you may remember I tried to get published in the Spectrum 16 Art Book last year, Alas I was not accepted…But since you can’t keep a Good Dog Down, I am trying again this year! I submitted my work last week to be put into Spectrum 17. Since the juries change every year you never know if they will like your work or not. But to up my chances I submitted a few more then last year. I tried to send my best of each median I work with.
I sent a Photo of my sculpting, a drawing I did in PhotoShop, a painting, and some Scratch art.
I wanted the Jury to be able to get a range of all I can do. It would be awesome if they accept them all but I’ll just be happy as a Cricket if only one gets in. Spectrum is my favorite art Book, it has all kinds of different fantasy artists published in it, and I would love to be apart of them. Just thought I’d let you all know what I was up to so I can get a few supporters to keep their fingers crossed Heehee. Wish me luck!
Well thanks for reading, I’m starting on some new Myxies tonight so Please keep checking my blogs for updates.

Later!

Scratch and Sniff

Well I’ve just finished some scratch art that I’m excited about. It turned out really well and it’s something a little different. I did a big clock and a woman on a staircase…I think it came out a bit surreal…could just be me.
So the idea came to me while flipping through one of my Spectrum Art books I love so much. I found a picture that had a clock in the background and I was thinking how cool that would look in Scratch Board. But the clock couldn’t be all by it’s self so I tried to add a women that appeared to be waiting, since she had a big Ol’ Clock right behind her…and putting her on the stairs seemed to complete the whole “waiting” effect.
Scratch Art is easier once you get the hang of it. I usually start out by drawing a small rough draft on paper of how I want it to look,
http://viewmorepics.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=viewImage&friendID=201883352&albumID=1828666&imageID=33073102
then lightly draw it in pencil on the board before scratching. I find this helps me to not mess up…since there is no erase on Scratch Board.
http://viewmorepics.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=viewImage&friendID=201883352&albumID=1828666&imageID=33073103
Then I get-a scratchin!
http://viewmorepics.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=viewImage&friendID=201883352&albumID=1828666&imageID=33073106
Finished! Working Title is Waiting til Midnight, What do you think?

Uninspirotivated

Ugh it is hard for me to get back into the swing of things. I have been trying to draw since I got back from Dragon Con but I just don’t have it in me for some reason. I’m unmotivated and uninspired right now so whenever I touch pencil to paper I find myself just sitting there starring. I don’t know what it is…perhaps I burned myself out a bit from the rush before D-Con or maybe I’m just too distracted with other things right now…either way it is Annoying! I have a whole slew of things I should be working on, I got a few commissions at the Con and I have some personal projects I have been putting off until a more opportune time. I think it has to do with my engagement…Yes I’m getting married! It happened over my vacation YAY! I’m super excited about it but I think that is all I can think about right now so my art is being put on the back burner. Yeah I know a lot goes into getting hitched so spending all my time on planning isn’t a bad thing Buuuuuut my art business also needs some attention. I need to dedicate sometime so I don’t get rusty…and besides I still have a few shows coming up during the Holidays. I just have to get motivated, I’ve been trying by reading my art books and watching Fantasy based movies, and that seems to be working a smidge. Well wish me luck everyone, Thanks for letting me rant, you guys are great listeners :P

Hopefully I will have some new art to post for you all soon, Wish me luck :)
